Day 38 - Dunbar.

Would you believe it, no showers because of Covid. The harbour master suggested I could go for a swim on one of their many fine beaches. I told him that that would not do, I'm not Scottish. The water is 9 degrees.

The ruins of ancient Dunbar castle with more Kittiwakes nesting in its walls (I thought they were supposed to be scarce).
Fortunately the swimming pool also overlooks the harbour so I got my shower.

The harbour master suggested I get the train to Edinburgh to watch the match. I think he is a comedian.

A funny think happened this morning, I can't get a decent FM radio signal, the only stations that I could clearly get this morning were French and Spanish.

Dunbar harbour.

  1. I don't think kittiwakes are rare but possibly not as common as they used to be.

The population is declining in some areas, perhaps due to a shortage of sandeels. After breeding birds move out into the Atlantic where they spend the winter. (From RSPB info)

    Wingspan: 95-110cm
    Weight: 300-500gPopulation:
    UK breeding: 380,000 pairs

You're lucky with the radio - you are spared more of Cummings' nonsense !

  2. Allegedly the formidable Agnes held out against 20,000 English with some servants and a few archers while her husband was away (away down the tavern most likely !) for 5 months.
If you believe that....... then you must be definitely Scottish plus quite mad.

  3. Ha ha! Yes, quite a gal! the stuff of legend. Mind you, the Scottish are a race apart.
Did the harbour master keep a straight face when he told you about the showers being out of bounds because of Covid? (It´s probably because he doesn´t want to clean up the facilities afterwards.)

    1. The showers are in the yacht club which still hasn't opened since closing down last year so not really down to him. Actually, he has been very helpful, reduced rate for staying 3 nights and letting me use his home address for delivery of a part for the oven. Raj is picking me up at 11.00 and is going to give me the tour of Edinburgh.

  4. Not a very warm Scottish welcome from the harbour master. I don't think the English are popular!

    2. Glad to hear he was helpful and kind. How lovely to catch up with Raj. After all these years ... I don´t think I ever met him, but I know of him from the 14 crowd upstairs. By the way, Brendan, lie low tomorrow night: England take on Scotland in the big football match!

  5. “Two hunters are out in the woods in New Jersey when one of them collapses. He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps ‘My friend is dead! What can I do?’ The operator says: ‘Calm down, I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.’ There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says ‘OK, now what?'”

  8. The Scots have mixed feelings about Global Warming. Because they get to sit on the mountains and watch the English drown.

  9. You have outdone yourself with the jokes, Mags!
